Legendary jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald has won 13 Grammy's, she has been called The Queen Of Jazz. This 1958 Ella Fitzgerald classic inspired Damian Marley and Nas to work together on a record - 2005's Road To Zion - the solid collaboration continued and produced a full album together. The video for Road to Zion, filmed in Queens, has cameos from George Clinton, Chali 2Na of Jurassic 5 and Game.

Damian Marley's It Was Written comes off Halfway Tree, his second studio album which won him a Grammy in 2002. This song samples a 1971 track from the often sampled Los Angeles Negros, a Chilean Mexican pop ballad band. Several songs from this influential band are covered by other artists, and they have been sampled by Jay-Z, The Beastie Boys and others.

The Chicago doo-wop/soul group The Impressions were formed 1958, the early roster included Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield. In later years Leroy Hutson joined after Mayfield went solo. The Impressions very much influenced Bob Marley and the Wailers, whose singing style was modeled after them. Marley, like other early ska and rocksteady groups, covered several songs from The Impressions including 1964's Keep On Moving.

Zap Pow was a 1970's Jamaican reggae band that after 1975 included Beres Hammond on vocals. This 1973 hit of theirs was sampled by Ini Kamoze for World A Music on his 1984 debut album. The track came out alongside Kamoze's signature Here Comes The Hotstepper, which helped in landing the young singer a 7 record deal with Elektra Records. World A Music has been sampled numerous times too, such as on Damian Marley's 2005 Welcome To Jamrock

King Floyd was a New Orleans soul singer mostly known for the 1970 hit Groove Me, was so successful he quit his job at the post office and went on tour. Baby Let Me Kiss You was his follow up record in 1971. In 1995 Shaggy sampled that record for Boombastic on his third studio album of the same title. The song was the first big U.S. hit for Shaggy, and the album won him a Grammy for Best Reggae Album that year.

Jackie Mitoo was a Jamaican keyboardist and songwriter, in the early1960's he was a member of The Skatalites. By the end of the 1960's Mittoo emigrated to Canada where he continued to record and ran a record shop. In 1970 his song Peanie Wallie was reworked by Bob Marley and The Wailers and recorded as Duppy Conqueror. In 1984 Barrington Levy sampled Mittoo's Hot Milk for his 1984 underground smash Murderer.

Buffalo Soldier was written and recorded in Bob Marley's final recording sessions in 1980. The song was written about the black U.S. cavalry units that fought in the "Indian Wars" happening after 1866. The songs bridge clearly samples the 1968 Banana Splits Theme Song. Although there was official credit to the sample, no claims have ever been made or filed against Marley.

Kingston-born Beenie Man began "toasting" at the age of five, and after winning a talent contest at age eight he recorded his first single Too Fancy. In 1993 he had his first number one song in Jamaica with Matie. In 1995 he borrowed some lyrics from Jerry Butler's Memories Don't Leave on his Stop Live Ina De Pass, which would later be re-recorded as Memories.

Patience is a song off Distant Relatives, a Nas and Damian Marley a collaborative project aimed at achieving awareness on plight of Africa with roceeds from the record going to a project there. Many of the songs mixed in African samples and elements. Patience samples Amadou & Mariam, a Grammy nominated duo also known as "the blind couple from Mali." Sabali was also sampled in 2012 by Maroon 5 for Wipe Your Eyes.

Shyne is a Belizean-born rapper who moved to Brooklyn as a teenager. At nineteen, just before dropping this single, a shooting incident would land him in prison until 2009, at which time he was deported back to Belize. At the 1999 shooting incident Shyne was famously at a New York nightclub with Puffy and Jennifer Lopez - his girlfriend at the time. This trademark song of his from 2000 is performed with Barrington Levy and samples Grace Jones' Nightclubbing.
